Ever thought what Success means to you?

If you haven't, maybe it's good to take a moment and write that out.
It's important to know where you are going and what exactly you want to experience in your life.

If you have defined your grandest version of your Success, you may have noticed how it starts to become a reality for you... That's part of the "Lazy Way to Success" philosophy in action. Things just start to happen automatically and enjoyably. I think that's really neat!

Usually, when you run against a brick wall or feel agony of any kind, it's time to evaluate whether you are taking the right route to reach your definition of success. Maybe you have to re-think your definition of success. Maybe what you really want is not in your vision of your success. - or maybe the previous version of your understanding of success needs some revision. (both are nearly the same thing)

It's also important to realize that we can start to FEEL that success right now. It does not have to be in the future. In your imagination, you can life the success you feel you need and deserve - and feel that is real to you. And soon it becomes real to you.

The bottom line is that our ability to think is the most precious resource. With that we can create a heavenly environment for ourselves or build those brickwalls that make life so hard..

To me, lazy way to success starts with thinking, and continues with doing the kind of things that you really enjoy, thus moving toward the vision of your ultimate success as you internally perceive it now.

Personal Manifesting Explained

You hear about manifesting principles everywhere you turn these days.

There's even a movie out that's all about the intention-manifestation model of reality.

While there's lots to say about it, today I'll let Steve Pavlina ("Personal Development for Smart People") give a personal account of how he experiences it in his own life.

Check it out, it's an well-written, intriguing read.

Use SMOG, not MOSG

When I was first learning to drive a car, my drivers education teacher taught me the acronym SMOG, which stands for Signal, Mirror, Over the shoulder, Go. It’s the order of actions to perform when changing lanes on the highway. Note that the first action is to signal your intention to change lanes. Of course, what do most people do? In practice they follow something like MOSG: Mirror, Over the shoulder, Signal, Go. They first determine whether or not they can change lanes by looking for an opening. If there’s no opening, they wait. They speed up or slow down to find a spot. They’re afraid that if they signal first when there’s no opening, they’ll look like a dolt because no one will let them in. But the truth is that even if there isn’t an opening, many drivers will allow you an opening if you signal first. If you don’t signal, the only way they can tell you want to change lanes is via telepathy. The longer you signal, even when there’s no opening at first, the more pressure you build in the other drivers to let you in.

This is a great analogy for how intention-manifestation works. You have to signal (intend) first. Sometimes if you look before signaling, there just won’t be an opening. But signal anyway, and you’ll create the very opening you seek.

The Happiness Factor

Smart marketers are catching on to the importance of happiness. And what a good time for that, too.

Today I see more and more of scare tactics, scarcity minded campaigns and so on. And more and more new marketers are learning those same negative tricks.

So I truly welcomed Tim Manners' column in Fast Company, on the pursuit of happiness in marketing.

It's good stuff. Read all of it. Here's a few essential quotes from it:

Fast Company: "Think about the most successful brands in recent memory. It isn't hard; it's actually getting to be a rather predictable list. What is it that Apple, Starbucks, Target, JetBlue, BMW, eBay and Trader Joe's promise? Damned if it isn't the pursuit of Happiness! Why is the list so short? Because most of what passes for marketing today (and yesterday, for that matter) is sheer Misery.

It's as if Jefferson never changed the word 'Property' to 'Happiness.' When most people think of marketing they think of anything but Happiness. We think of the most crass forms of materialism?or 'Property.? We think of bad jingles, intrusive telemarketers, junk mail, and those little cards that fall out of magazines. Try to find a little Happiness by escaping to the movies and what do we find? More ads. Before the movie, embedded in the movie, and after the movie. You want a coupon with that? No? Can we have your zip code then?

A grand total of one marketer -- Philips Electronics -- seems to understand how most of us feel about this. Philips wanted to buy up all the available ad time at movie theaters in Minneapolis and Boston and take credit for not using it to advertise its products. They thought it would be cool to give us a little break and simply run a short message letting us know that they were sponsoring the cinema silence ?"

Sure it's a big business perspective, but I think there's a lot in there for all of us.

I refuse to believe that the only way to achieve results in marketing is to be intrusive, scary, and downright bully your prospects.

It's time for a new paradigm.... much like the Lazy Way to Success... more on that soon. :)

Hammockology

This one's for Fred Gratzon, the undisputed king of Lazy Success, the one with a PhD in Hammockology.

Among a trillion other things, Fred laid out the specs for a perfect hammock in last month's teleseminar, and even gave out a recommendation for the best one.

However, I think today we just may have him beat. I mean, how do you beat this concept of a free-standing hammock with no trees required! Price tag? Don't ask. :)

So, maybe we have a winner on our hands, no? ;)

I was talking to my Buddhist pal, N, the other day, rattling on about “prosperity consciousness” and how I just want to get to the place, prosperity-wise, that no decision in the ordinary course of things need go thumbs-up or thumbs-down because of MONEY.

He proceeded to give me his standard lecture about how “money needn’t be an issue,” whether or not there is “enough.” From his Buddhist perspective, there is never enough, because even if I figured out how to pile up a billion ducats and guard them with a fire-belching dragon, I would still be miserable, seeing as how I didn’t have two billion ducats.

It’s not about the Moolah, but the energy of high-level creativity often translates into the energy we call Money, which can then be invested in the service of more high-level creativity, and so forth.

I’m sorry to have to say this, but the Artist who consciously or unconsciously looks askance at this energy exchange needs to examine why it is that he or she is so certain it’s all about NOT the Money. Because certain they are, and their certainty will translate into resisting the flow of money. I would even go so far as to say they are really just trapped on the flip side of the coin the Enron thugs were grubbing for.

Can't argue with that. :) Good stuff all around.

It's uncanny. Every successful entrepreneur I talk to can recite the definitive moment or experience that turned the tide in their favor.

Nine times out of ten, it's an experience that helped or even forced them to 'get' cashflow management.

I know it has been that way for me. I actually needed more than one lesson, but I finally got it. :)

It's amazing how common it is that entrepreneurs or even fairly large companies (not to mention the likes of Enron) have no idea where they lose money and where they make money. Yet, it's obvious how important that is to know this one single crucial thing.

Fred Gratzon (author of the Lazy Way To Success) has posted one his exhilarating 'war-horse' stories on his blog, and yes this one's about -- cashflow management.

This time Art broke the silence. “Fred,” he sighed, “are you making money ?”

His question took me aback. “I don't know,” I replied honestly. “And there's no way of knowing. The accounting system is next to useless … as you well know.”
My response produced another abyss of dead air. When Art didn't speak, my heart dropped and my soul shrank. I pondered the tragic irony that my business was going to fail because it was too successful. And then …. The Universe must have hiccupped.
“Fred,” Art asked, “does it feeeeel like you're making money?”
“Well, it feeeeeels like we are making money,” I answered with Pavarotti-like sincerity, my moist eyes glistening with fresh, heart-felt tears.

How To Do What You Really Love

You know, there's a bit of a trick to doing what you really love for a living.

Often, the first response is something like "well, I like smoking Cuban cigars and watching TV 5 hours a day, how is that supposed to make me rich?

The answer is, of course, while that may be what you like doing the most to fill the hours, chances are (very high) that what you really LOVE doing is something you haven't yet identified.

So how do you find out what that something that you do love and also brings home the lettuce?

Admittedly, there's a trick to that...

In a recent, rather excellent post Paul Graham goes on about it at length:

To do something well you have to like it. That idea is not exactly novel. We've got it down to four words: "Do what you love." But it's not enough just to tell people that. Doing what you love is complicated.

Fred Gratzon spends some 15 pages in his book to lead the way, here's a sampling of how to go about it:

You know when you're on the right track when your activity:
- gives you pleasure
- feels natural, comfortable and right

If you don't feel that way, here's where to look:
- where you normally excel
- where things go easily for you
- in an area you feel passionately about
- where you seem to get the breaks

Science Agrees: Happiness First

Now here's something to put a smile on your face, and what a good time for that too!

The Guardian reports that at last, scientists are finding that the correlation between happiness and success is actually such that happiness creates success, not the other way round as had been previously assumed.

Happiness, rather than working hard, is the key to success, according to research published today. Cheerful people are more likely to try new things and challenge themselves, which reinforces positive emotion and leads to success in work, good relationships and strong health, say psychologists.

The findings suggest that happiness is not a "feelgood" luxury, but is essential to people's wellbeing.

"There was strong evidence that happiness leads people to be more sociable and more generous, more productive at work, to make more money, and to have stronger immune systems," said Prof Sonja Lyubomirsky from the University of California Riverside.

Wow. How about that? Who knew that scientists would come around just now.

Is It Evil to Be Lazy?

You know, 'it' happens so easily.

You have something go just ever so slightly wrong in your life:

a bill is not paid on time
your health starts to slide after picking up bad habits on vacation
you ignore a bump in your relationship

It seems like an innocent oversight at first, but before you know it..

you're facing a line of creditors
you develop a health condition that requires half your time and all of your money
your significant other 'suddenly' decides s/he wants to be alone

In other words, these things escalate, often at a very rapid pace.
I don't say this to scare or intimidate you, but to illustrate a point.

Not being alert in your life has a very high price tag.

So what does that have to do with The Lazy Way to Success?

Oversights happen when you're busy, and immersed in working instead of living.
That's why you don't even notice when you get 'off-course'.

Suddenly, being 'Lazy' doesn't sound like such an evil thing anymore, does it?
It has the distinct benefit of averting danger that has not yet come.

Joe Vitale is fond of saying "just take the escalator through life". I very much agree. What it all boils down to is...

Do you let things escalate or do you take the escalator?

Well now. When it comes to success and good fortune, there are secrets and then there are secrets.

There are the ones that you find in book after book, the tips and the tactics etc. Regurgitate ad nauseam. You know what I mean -- goal-setting, getting all fired up, etc.

Then there are the ones that sound so simple, so elegant and deceivingly obvious that the vast majority will either pooh-pooh it as nonsense or miss the point entirely.

If you ever listened to copywriting legend Gary Halbert go on one of his famous rants, you know what I mean. :) The guy is leaving a trail of diamonds and people just step on them without noticing a thing.

NOW -- Fred Gratzon wrote about a special tactic of his that is giving him unparalleled results every time he uses it. Are you ready? Here it is: GO TO SLEEP BY 10 P.M.

How's that for a mind-bendingly clever little "trick", huh? You have no idea.. I'll spare you the speculation, you can go over to Fred's blog and read the comments yourself. I'll just say my experience backs up his 100%.

Here's a twist though.. my experience is that getting up early in the morning is
possibly even MORE important. How early is early? 7 a.m.? 6. a.m.? Try between 4 and 5. There is something quite magical about that hour of the day. Soak in it
and see ideas fly and things getting done before most people get up for
breakfast! Besides... when you get up that early, going to sleep by 10 p.m.
suddenly becomes quite automatic.. :)

The article that caught my eye is called

It is all good stuff, but the last one strikes me as the most important thing of all, as it sets everything in motion. Be it Internet Marketing, business in general or life itself.

True decision is really the same thing as.. ta da, commitment! One of the cornerstones of the Lazy Way to Success. Now, commitment may sound to you like hard work and restricting yourself. Most people feel that way and rarely REALLY make any decisions, and let other people or life circumstances make the decisions for them.

In truth, true decision or commitment is the ultimate relief! Put it to use and you will quickly find that it is the real antidote to hard, unforgiving work. Just make up your mind for good and things start to happen!

Commit to something worthy and believable to the degree that you cannot draw back your decision even if you wanted to, and you will find the world conspiring to help you make it true!

The Guilt of Not Doing 'Work'

One of the greatest breakthroughs of the Lazy Way to Success for me personally has been the gradual realization that I can and should do the very things that I enjoy doing the most.

It hasn't always been easy to spot myself doing the 'harder' things just because it feels like it has more worth. Each time I have been able to catch myself doing that, I notice that I do it because I'm actually avoiding doing something that I REALLY love to do.

It is bizarre when you think about it, but many have the same experience. Preferring to do 'work' instead of the most exhilarating, uplifting things that, on inspection, have much more monetary potential as well.

Going back to the core principles of the Ultimate Performance, as laid out in the book, really helps. Puts you back on track and makes you feel good about doing the very things you love to do.

Right now, I'm using it to ramp up another business while pulling my awareness out of another. It feels fantastic! Try it today, you just might find what you need to be doing right now. :-)

While entrepreneurship is at the very core of the Lazy Way to Success, let's get into some interesting career math for a moment.

Let's say you're earning $25,000 per year working at a corporate job. You like the job because you're good at it and feel that you're doing a good job for the employer. Hence, your career prospects should be quite good. Yes?

Before you answer that, think of your peers occupying a managerial position and earning $250,000. Do they have 10 times the experience? OR.. working 10 times harder?

I would think you agree the answer is no, even in theory. The short answer to why those earning ten times more is: Smart Laziness. Quite literally: do less, earn more.

So what do you need to do to upgrade your career standing 10 times or more?

Why is copying successful people NOT enough?

We're not going to fool you here. We're not going to tell you that copying what someone else has done is going to cause you to achieve the same exact results. Even when it's someone like Fred Gratzon. When you think about it, it doesn't make any sense! How could you copy another person's doing and being so completely that you would end up with the same exact results??!

This simply defies common sense. Your circumstances are unique, and you need simple, understandable advice that you can actually APPLY to your situation.

Yet that is the claim you see all over. "Just copy what we've done using these step-by-step instructions, and you'll be on your way!". Yes, probably on your way to another disappointment in your earnest quest to become successful and lead a happy life.

Instead, we propose that you go deeper. Take the smarter approach and learn the very principles that cause every success story to happen. Also, if you were to fail to follow these simple, natural principles, you would be most definitely setting yourself up to failure. Hi all,

The author of the Lazy Way to Success ebook Fred Gratzon recently wrote in his blog the story about how this ebook came about. You can find the story behind the link above and at the end of this posting.

To add to the story from my experience, I have to admit that the lazy way is THE way. This ebook project has been an expression of passion and calling and that's why it so much fun to do. We just love getting these ideas to the general public.

And again, whenever we've felt strain we've returned to the core ideas. We just played around with the ebook and the web systems, and that's when we also achieved most results. We've noticed this several times, which makes this philosophy even more obviously true.. Try it, you'll be positively surpriced! ;)

Applying the Lazy Way

Having written a book which extols the lazy way to success and having written this blog with the same overall theme, I have joyfully painted myself into a corner. In other words, I am now professionally obligated to be lazy.

Immediately after my book got published, I fell into a trap. In my enthusiasm to popularize it, I violated some of the precepts I had written about. I went on exhausting book tours, gave lectures, and chased after the media. While the book sold somewhat, it wasn't worth the trouble I was putting into it.

On the other hand, in areas where I did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, I started to have great success. Foreign publishers approached me out of the blue. I've since sold language rights to five foreign publishers and more keep coming. I haven't done anything proactive to stimulate that demand. I have since come to realize that the book itself wants to live up to its name and achieve success by having me do nothing too. So, happy to oblige, I decided to sit back and let it all come to me.

And it continues to happen. Two young, bright-eyed, energetic Finnish brothers (Eero and Juho Tunkelo) read my book, raved about it in their letters to me, and asked if they could create and market an e-book version. They insisted that they would make it a huge success and I could just be lazy and not do anything at all.

Since I am eminently qualified to do nothing and since I am only too happy to do nothing, I agreed to their proposal.

Eero interviewed me over the phone a few times. He asked some compelling questions and recorded me shooting off my mouth. He now gives those recorded conversations as bonuses to customers who buy the e-book. Eero and Juho are also arranging other high-powered web sites to offer this e-book. And me, I am free to write silly blogs whenever the whim and/or muse strikes or I can meditate or play golf or stew over the Phillies. It is a match made in heaven.
